Poem: Monkey Music Box

I write because the purple monkeys made me a home in their trees
after they cracked the music box you stuck me in.
They taught me to hang from tree limbs
and fly above the clouds.

I write because the pink elephants carried me far in their jungles
once I escaped your music box.
They taught me to never forget my place
in this world we all call home.

I write because the orange fish took me down deep to their caverns
when I reached the place where the jungle meets the sea.
They taught me the peace in silence
and the peace in trusting a family.

I write because the brilliant coral survived under the harsh
reality of death and overcame the challenges.
They taught me to stand firm against
the cruelty of society.

I write because the lilac giraffes showed me the top of the world
on our journey through the jungle.
They taught me to always stand tall
and be counted.

I write because the rustic fire ants took me down below
into another civilization where you work together to survive.
They taught me to hold others accountable
and make people squirm in your presence.

I write because the opal trees stood still for centuries
holding many secrets of the past.
They taught me to hold my tongue,
allowing secrets to reveal themselves.

I write because the blue-violet mice led me underneath the forest floor
to where trees leave their secrets.
They taught me the power behind silence
to make a point in this world.

I write because the green hyenas shared their disgrace
left behind in your music box.
They taught me to make noise
when the world wants to shut the door.

I write because the maroon mountains stood for their beliefs
like a swore thumb.
They taught me to stand for my rights
when everyone else sends them away.

I write because the lime green butterflies transformed from their past mistakes
and revealed their beauty once released from your music box.
They taught me the power behind transformation
in order to change the world.

I write because the yellow turtles slowed me down to show me
the beauty from within.
They taught me to be slow to judge and
quick to forgive.

I write because the red jack rabbits hopped in my lap begging me
to join the chase which your music box once withheld me from.
They taught me to chase after
my dreams and follow my complex heart.

I write because the purple monkeys made me a home
allowing me to breathe outside of your music box.
They taught me to clean the old wounds
of the unjust.

I write because the sky is pink and gray,
it blends with my moods;
it whispers to me,
and I need to tell our story.
